Chip Packet Project Melbourne

Schools can join the Chip Packet Project to combat landfill by collecting, cleaning, and fusing empty foil packets into durable, warm, waterproof blankets for the homeless. Students learn sustainability by transforming waste, with approximately 112 packets creating one survival blanket through a “foil fusion” ironing process.

Our Mission and Impact

The Chip Packet Project Melbourne is dedicated to transforming discarded chip packets into survival blankets for those experiencing homelessness and hardship. Our mission is to reduce waste while providing warmth and protection to vulnerable communities. Through community collaboration, we aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Creating Change, One Blanket at a Time

Step 1

Get Involved

Cleaning your foil is SUPER easy! Check out the helpful instructions below.

When you send in your opened/flat/clean packets it means that our volunteers can get straight onto making blankets for those in need! Thank You!

Wash  with warm soap water & dry them & bring them to the Community House.

You will be helping multiple causes – it takes 80 years for foil to breakdown in landfills so instead of your foil rubbish going to the already overflowing landfills, it will be helping those who need warm blankets, & you still get to enjoy your chippies without it costing you any extra money to help those in need!

If your school / organisation would like to get involved. You can start your collection box point in your school or place of work. You can use our support logo. Either print off our posters or make your own creative design And stick it on a box .

Duke of  Edinburgh Award

If you are doing your DofE awards, which ever level you are at, why not get involved in the CPPM for your volunteering section. You can take part as an individual, group or school.

How Schools Can Participate:

  • Collection: Establish a collection point for used chip packets (clean, dry, and cut open).
  • Preparation: Students wash packets in warm soapy water, towel-dry, or machine-wash in a pillowcase or on a quick wash in the dishwasher.
  • Foil Fusion Events: Schools can host workshops to learn how to fuse packets, using baking paper, a wooden chopping board and an iron.
  • Impact: This hands-on project reduces landfill (which can take 80 years to decompose) and provides essential, warm bedding for the community.

Transforming waste into something useful

By collecting chip packets students can contribute to repurposing these materials, reducing waste, and positively impacting our community.

Creating survival sheets and bedding

It takes approximately 55 family sized chip packets or approximately 112 regular sized chip packets to create a single blanket, and the impact of this small action is tremendous.

Join us in this remarkable journey of turning waste into something useful and transformative. Together, we can make a lasting impact, one chip packet at a time.

If your group or organisation would like a Certificate for all your hard work with this Project please get in touch.
